I am Gumby, Damn it!

June 2002

I am Gumby, Damn It!

For the many of you old enough to remember the classic "Gumby" skits done by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live! in the 80's,  Murphy changed the attitude of the little animated character for many of us forever.  Every time I hear the word "Gumby", I fondly remember the hilarious skits with Eddie Murphy's trademarked "I am Gumby, Damn it!" statements in the skits.  However, this story is not about Murphy, but rather Brighton, Michigan racer Jim Monson, and his incredible 1987 NMCA class-legal Super Modified Mustang coupe, which is affectionately known as "Gumby."

Recently, we caught up with Jim at the annual NMCA National event at Cecil County Raceway in Rising Sun, Maryland.  For a guy who has gotten used to going to Ford-only races, this race was a refreshing change of pace for me.  Unlike many of you, my racing roots started out Chevy based, and it was neat for me seeing all of the different Detroit iron at one race.

At this race, Jim was making his first passes on his new 401 cid Dart Windsor block based bullet, and made it all the way to the semi-finals with an 8.10 at 170+ mph with a conservative tune.  This particular Dart block is the first Windsor block Dart sold to a customer, and Jim stated that while it had a couple of minor problems initially, the block is a very stout piece.

Hans Fuestal Racing Engines is responsible for the bullet, which makes use of a FAST/Kinsler fuel injection setup combined with a huge shot of nitrous supplied by a TNT Pro EFI Fogger system.  Initial dyno tuning was done by James Jurski of TNT, and we expect to see this Mustang well into the 7's by the end of the 2002 season.

While talking to Jim, we learned that this particular Mustang started out as an $800 rolling piece of junk.  The car utilizes is a very stout 25-1c chassis that was completely home built by Jim in his own garage!  The car won the NMCA's Best Engineered award at the 1998 NSCA World Finals.  Jim told us that "If you want to race at this level on a budget, you have to be willing to build some things yourself."  From the sounds of it, Jim has learned his lessons well!

Jim started bracket racing in 1994 at Detroit Dragway, and saw his first Street-legal drag racing in 1995 and became hooked on heads-up drag racing.  He went home and immediately started building his 91 Mustang GT for NSCA Super Street racing.  Jim finished 3rd in points in NSCA Super Street in 1999 and 4th in NSCA Super Modified in 2001.

Jim would like to thank his wife Christina for all her love and support, his hard working crew, Dan Scheidiman and Matt Hoffman, as well as James at TNT, and his sponsors, Aztec Mfg Co., Gil-Mar Mfg Co., and Texas Nitrous Technology.  Jim would also like to thank Tony Depillo and the rest of the NMCA/NSCA staff for providing a great place to race.

After watching this car for an afternoon, all I can say is look out Super Modified... Gumby is coming after you,  Damn it!
