15th Annual Ford Mustang World Finals - Wrap Up
by George Klass of Accufab Performance Parts and Accessories

May 2005

Was it hot down in Dallas? That would be like asking if it's sandy in the Gobi Desert.

Here is a quick recap of the "hot" action.

In the Mr. Gasket Pro Class, Doug Mangrum led off qualifying with a 6.501, 214.89.
Doug made it into the finals against Chuck Samuel and went down with a 6.642, 212.63 over Chuck's better 6.556, 221.74.

In the ProCharger Street Outlaw Class, Chip Haveman was on the pole with a best ever run for his new car, 7.238, 203.06. In the finals, it was Cale Aronson taking the win with his new Mustang, over Chips oh-so-close (.006) red light.

A fat field showed up for the Borla Exhaust Street Renegade Class, with Texas's own, Crede Young in the #1 spot, with a 8.009, 175.32. This Renegade battle went right down to the final round, with Ronnie Wilson taking the win over Crede, with a tick better light (.080 vs. the losing .122) and a slightly slower ET (8.072 vs. the losing 8.052). Too close to call with the naked eye.

In the BFGoodrich Drag Radial class, it was Manny Alvarez all the way, qualifying #1 and getting the win over Brian Green.

Matt Jones didn't have to travel that far (from Austin, TX) to get his win in the Edelbrock Street Bandit Class. Matt qualified #1 with a 8.623, 160.37 and took the win from Mike Abdalla, 8.671, 162.27 to Mikes losing 9.226, 150.20.

In the "I don't know how they do it class", (Blow-By Racing Street Warrior Class) Jeremy Martorella was on the pole with a 9.473, 144.15. Darrell Peterson was off the pace (for him) and qualified 3rd (10.064). In round-1, it was Jeremy matched up with Darrell in the battle that has been going on all year long. Darrell won this one with a 9.383, 140.65 to a losing 9.575, 140.81. In the finals it was Darrell over John Scaro, with a 9.544 vs. John's 9.757.

In the Ford Racing Open Comp Class, 27 cars lined up for eliminations on Sunday. The winner was Mac Sibley out of Midlothian, TX.

Street Stang, sponsored by SCT had a rousing final race too, with 10 cars answering the call. Street Stang runs on 12.50 Index. Darrell Lucas qualified closest, with a 12.545. But in the final round it was Mark Anderson taking the win over Johnny Langton, a 12.591 vs. the losing 12.577. A slightly slower reaction time did Johnny in.

As usual, the Steeda / Hyland Mod Motor class had the largest field in Showdown competition, with 32 cars qualified. After five tough rounds of eliminations, it came down to Robert Hindman winning over Danny Towe. I don't know how Robert does it. If we could bottle it and sell it, we would be rich.

Everyone knows that Texas is truck country, and there were plenty of trucks entered in the JDM Tough Truck Class. After the smoke cleared, it wa Paul Gamino over Ron Durham in the finals.

In the JBA Headers Focus Frenzy Class, the finals came down to East vs. the West, with Aaron Royston out of Denton, TX beating Donald Cobin from Waltham, MA.

In the Saturday Bracket Classes, it was Mac Sibley over Gary Carter in Fast Ford, Greg Combs over Dustin Donnell in Quick Ford and Darrell Lucas over Paul Gamino in Street Ford.

On the Sunday bracket eliminations it was Vernon Purdham over Gary Youngblood in Fast, Tracy Brown over Greg Herbert in Quick, and Paul Gamino (again) the winner, this time over Yvetta Dittmer.

On Sunday, the True Street Bracket race was won by Tony Bourns over Craig Masttison.

In the Tremec Transmission True Street event on Saturday, and after the 30-mile cruise, after the cool down, and after the three back to back passes, here are the results. The ultimate quickest average was Tony Strong with a 9.528 average. Runner-up was Mike House with a 10.544 average. The quickest 11-second averaged belonged to Robert Jazquez with a 11.205, The 12-second winner was AJ Zabojnik (say that 5 times real fast) with a 12.032. The 13-seoned spot was nailed down by Ryan Rogers and the 14-seconed place was taken by Jason Erenver at 14.010.

After the event was concluded for the evening on Sunday, a grand banquet was held in the Champions Room at the Texas Motorplex, and the 2005 FFW Champions were crowned and awarded for their efforts.

Pro Champion, Chuck Samuel, Runner-up, Mike Herring

Street Outlaw Champion, Billy Glidden, Runner-up, Tim Lynch

For all you Champions, congratulations. The good news is that you can have "#1" on your car for next season. The bad news is that your accomplishments have resulted in having a bulls-eye painted on you back for next season.
