FORD 2005 MUSTANG TO APPEAR AT NMRA QUARTERMASTER ALL-STAR
FORD NATIONALS ON SUNDAY -- MAY 4TH, 2003
In the spirit of their founder who put the world on wheels, Ford
Motor Company executives will fan out to 100 North American cities
this spring as part of Ford’s 100th anniversary celebration. Henry
Ford was one of the first to tour the great American landscape
regularly with friends, including fellow historical figures Thomas
Edison and John Burroughs.
Andy Benedict, Executive Director – Global Purchasing, will be in
the Columbus, Ohio area on May 3 and 4, 2003 to serve as the Grand
Marshal for the 4th Annual National Mustang Racing Association
(NMRA) Ford All-Star Nationals at National Trail Raceway in
Hebron.
“These road trips are fitting way to mark the 100th year of Ford,
and they give us a chance to get out of our Dearborn, Michigan,
headquarters to spread our enthusiasm about the Centennial and
some of our legendary products with people around the country,”
said Benedict.
The Mustang GT Coupe concept car, which captivated car enthusiasts
when it was introduced at the 2003 North American International
Auto Show, will be on display at the track on Sunday, May 4. The
all-new 2005 Ford Mustang draws on the design direction of the
concept car as well as the distinct styling cues from classic
models, capturing the essence of the American pony car's design
and performance heritage.
The original 1964½ Mustang actually evolved from the
racing-inspired, two-seat concept car called the Mustang 1. After
reviewing archived files, Mustang’s modern-day crafters were
struck by how the original design embraced the same inspirational
cues that communicate performance. The design team looked beyond
production models to the Mustang 1 concept for modern inspiration.
The Tungsten Silver Mustang GT Coupe concept car is instantly
recognizable as a Mustang, yet the team stretched the design far
into the future with a distinctly modern look. Like the Mustang 1
concept, the GT Coupe concept is a two-place sportscar. It started
out with a significantly modified Ford Thunderbird
rear-wheel-drive architecture. The platform was sectioned to
achieve the proper proportion. The front-end geometry is all
original – customized to accommodate the signature Mustang MOD
4.6-liter V-8.
The silhouette of the car is unmistakably Mustang, conjuring up
images of 1967 and 1968 Fastbacks. Inside, there’s no mistaking
the no-holds-barred Mustang classic cues. The cockpit is dramatic
for the driver and passenger with lush red and charcoal leather
accented by billet-aluminum hardware.
The 100-city road show is a prelude to Ford's gala hometown
celebration in Dearborn. The Road is Ours Centennial Celebration
from June 12-16 is expected to draw thousands to the grounds of
World Headquarters.

>> EVENT RESULTS <<
3rd Annual Bassani Xhaust NMRA Ford Nationals - April 5-6, 2003
Silver Dollar Raceway - Reynolds, Georgia
Predictions of rain did not come true, for the most part, as the
NMRA rocked Silver Dollar Raceway. Doug Mangrum, Randy Haywood,
Kenny Compton, B.K. Meyers and Chris Tuten score their first-ever
wins!
Sleepy Silver Dollar Raceway got loud and boisterous the first
weekend of April as the Bassani Xhaust NMRAFord Nationals,
presented by 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords magazine, blew open the
gates to begin the third annual all-Ford event. The event featured
all the usual highlights of an NMRA event, including the big
All-Ford Auto Show Spectacular, presented by Dallas Mustang, as
well as the swap meet, the Centerforce Burnout Contest, Denso Top
Qualifier awards, and, of course, the NMRA Jet-Hot Ford Drag
Racing Series, presented by Ford Racing Performance Parts. By the
time it was over, there were ecstatic first-time winners in the
top classes and several records set. While Friday was a beautiful,
sunny day, the weather forecast did not look good for the rest of
the weekend, with a 70% chance of rain on both Saturday and
Sunday. The sky was gray and threatening, but rain only fell late
Saturday afternoon, so the only missed racing was the final round
of qualifying for the top thre e classes. Sunday also had gray
skies, but the rain stayed away and all rounds of eliminations
were completed.
ProCharger Pro 5.0 saw some intense action, with Doug Mangrum
qualifying on top of the field with a thundering 6.82. Mangrum got
to the final round by taking out Jeff Allebach then receiving a
bye in the 6-car field. On the other side of the ladder, Don Walsh
Jr. beat Tim Savell in the Wynne Speed machine, and Randy Eakins
took out Brit Floyd, who had problems with his new blue beast.
Eakins then got around a holeshot to take out Walsh and go to the
final round to face Mangrum. It was set to be a great race, but
Eakins’ line lock failed and he rolled through the lights,
bringing on the redlight and handing the win to Mangrum, his
first-ever NMRA win.
The hero of MSD Super Street Outlaw was Randy Haywood. On
Saturday, Haywood ran a 7.99 at 174mph to become the number five
qualifier and the first-ever modular-powered Super Street Outlaw
to run in the sevens. The 21-car class saw a record number of six
cars in the sevens in qualifying! Haywood continued to impress by
getting past Spurgeon Adkins, Gary Rohe, Mike Smith (who crashed
hard in the third round), and Mark VanMeter (who ran 180mph, the
fastest speed in the class) to face Mike “Punk” Trimandilis in the
final round. Haywood got the holeshot and stormed to an 8.16 at
172 to take the win, as Trimandillis lost traction and slowed to a
9.30. That was the first time Haywood had ever won an NMRA event.
Edelbrock Hot Street and ProCharger EFI Renegade also had
first-time winners in Kenny Compton and B.K. Meyers, respectively.
Compton made it to the winner’s circle at the expense of J.R.
Heuring, Shane Long, and Scott Budisalich. Long and Budisalich
were the runner-up and the winner, respectively, of the
season-opener in Bradenton. Compton used .400-zone reaction times
in every round, and ran a 9.26 at 144 in the final to Budisalich’s
9.36 at 143. EFI Renegade’s winner, B.K. Meyers, has been trying
to make it to the winner’s circle since the very beginning of the
NMRA, and he did it in style at Silver Dollar. With a renewed
dedication and more power in his beautiful blue Mustang GT, Meyers
took out two former class champions in the semifinals and finals.
He flat outran Mike Post in the semis, with a 9.23 to Post’s 9.34,
and then had one of the best races of the weekend, against Kurgan,
in the final. Meyers got a very small starting line advantage and
ran a 9.24 to Kurgan’s s o-close 9.25. B.K. Meyers finally won his
first NMRA race!
5.0 Mustang Real Street also had a first-time winner in Chris
Tuten. Tuten was the number one qualifier at both this race and
the opener in Bradenton, and he went all the way to the winner’s
circle in Georgia. Tuten met fellow nitrous racer Bruce Hemminger
in the final round and it was a very close race. Hemminger got the
jump with a .506-second reaction time (to Tuten’s .516), but
Tuten’s green machine powered past Hemminger, running a 10.127 to
Hemminger’s 10.167!
BFGoodrich Drag Radial saw a repeat of Bradenton, and most of the
2002 season. Chris Little put his lime green nitrous machine in
the number one spot on Saturday with an 8.98 at 153mph pass, then
got past the rest of the Drag Radial field to meet Matt Cutler in
the final. Cutler got the jump, but Little outpowered him for the
win.
Darin Hendricks went two for two in Tremec Pure Street with a win
at Silver Dollar. He put “The Evil Twin” on the pole in
qualifying, then shifted his way to a final round repeat of
Bradenton, facing defending class champion Gene Hindman. Hendricks
used a holeshot and a 10.81 to take the victory over Hindman, who
ran a 10.82.
Mike Washington also went two for two, this time in BFGoodrich
Factory Stock. The winner at Bradenton, Washington found some
“secrets” between the races and showed up to Silver Dollar with
dominance on his mind. He did just that, qualifying number one,
becoming a member of the 11-second club, and winning the final
round against Jamie Holten. Washington actually won the round with
a 12.02 to Holten’s quicker 11.98, but Washington’s .05-second
starting line advantage was enough to keep him out front at the
traps.
Vortech Modular Muscle had 28 cars competing. The quickest was
Aaron Archer’s full-on race car. Unfortunately, it was too quick,
running nearly a full second quicker than the class allows.
Richard Lelsz became the number one qualifier, but it was newcomer
Gary Youngblood of Brookwooddale, Alabama, taking out Bryan White
of Grayson, Georgia in the final round.
Toyo Tires Open Comp also had a brand new winner, Greg Cole of
Bowdon, Georgia. Cole met Florida racer Jon Anderson in the final
round, and ran closer to his dial-in to take the victory. The
Nitto Tire Truck & Lightning class is made up primarily of
Lightning pickups, but at Silver Dollar there were two familiar
Rangers in the final round. Randy Morrison (the 2001 class
champion and number four in 2002 points) faced Mark Morales
(number 3 in 2002), and it was Morrison taking the win
The Superchips Bracket classes were once again filled with close
racing. Superchips Pro Ford was won by veteran modular racer
Robert Hindman. Hindman lost in the first round of Vortech Modular
Muscle eliminations, and decided to enter the brackets, which he
won! Hindman beat Dwayne Richardson in the final. Superchips Super
Ford had Dallas Burger taking the top prize, and Superchips Street
Ford saw David Cunningham take out Stan Tripp.
The Denso Top Qualifier money went to Doug Mangrum (ProCharger Pro
5.0) and Randy Haywood (MSD Super Street Outlaw), who both went on
to win their classes. The Centerforce Burnout Contest was once
again a smoky, crow-pleasing affair. The most tire carnage was
performed by Roy Gavlik, who took home the prize from Centerforce
Clutches.
The NMRA All-Ford Auto Show Spectacular, presented by Dallas
Mustang, had a decent turnout of cars, even in the face of
inclement weather. The hottest ride in the show was Jim
Blackburn’s beautiful ’55 F-100 pickup, which won the Best of Show
award. Blackburn built this truck with full Corvette suspension, a
leather interior and a beautiful silver/gray paint job that had
everyone swooning. The car show portion of the NMRA event series
continues to grow in popularity, with more and more hot Fords
coming out to participate. Special thanks goes out to our host car
club, Flag City Mustangs of Macon, Georgia, and their president
Guy Jenkins.
The next round of NMRA action takes place May 2-4, 2003, as the
4th Annual QuarterMaster NMRA All-Star Nationals comes to National
Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio. Check it out at

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ATI ProCharger Superchargers to Sponsor NMRA Pro 5.0 Category
for the 2003 Series
SANTA ANA, California–MARCH 7, 2003 – ProMedia Events announced
today that ATI ProCharger, one of the leading supercharger
manufacturers, has signed as the title sponsor of the fan-favorite
NMRA Pro 5.0 racing category for the 2003 season. ProCharger has
been the class sponsor of the ProCharger Renegade eliminator since
2001, and has committed to also sponsor the NMRA Pro 5.0 class for
2003 after last year’s sponsor recently stepped aside.
“This NMRA Pro 5.0 class sponsorship was a natural for
ProCharger, and we intend to do everything in our power to grow
this class dramatically in the next two years,” said Dan Jones,
ProCharger President. “With the NMRA’s outstanding promotion of
the Pro 5.0 class, the ESPN2 television coverage, and the support
of 5.0 Mustang Magazine, we know that ProCharger’s brand name will
benefit greatly from this relationship. Our sponsorship of the Pro
5.0 class is, in reality, intended to promote the ATI ProCharger
name to the hundreds of thousands of “average” fans across the
country who follow this class. The audience ProCharger is
targeting is a street legal fan, a general Ford racing fan, or
even a street Mustang owner---the type that follows Pro 5.0 and
now he or she will associate that with ProCharger superchargers.”
“NMRA is intensely committed to re-building the ProCharger Pro
5.0 class, and that starts with a strong sponsor who shares our
dedication to the class, “ said Charlie Harmon, NMRA V.P. of Event
Development. “With the new Pro 5.0 engine program, our commitment
to five years of chassis and driveline rules, and the new Pro 5.0
Entrant Support Program; our goal is to support the existing
racers as well as help get fresh racers in ProCharger Pro 5.0. We
are working hard to get back to exciting, competitive Pro 5.0
racing, and basically have full fields by the end of the 2004
season. We couldn’t be more happy with this new ProCharger support
for 2003 and beyond.”
“ProCharger is committed to the class as a whole, not just the
supercharged combinations,” said Harmon. “Dan and Ken Jones, Jim
Summers, and the entire ProCharger organization is keenly aware
that for the class to succeed it needs a mix of competitive power
adders, and they are one hundred percent supportive of NMRA doing
what it takes to make this class into a major force in drag
racing.” Added Dan Jones: “While we are proud of the
accomplishments of NMRA Pro 5.0 ProCharger-equipped racers such as
Don Walsh Jr., Doug Mangrum, and now, Bill Rimmer—a full field of
nitrous, naturally aspirated, supercharged, big block, and
turbocharger equipped Pro 5.0 teams will make this ProCharger Pro
5.0 class successful in our eyes.”
ATI ProCharger, based in Kansas City, is one of the leading
supercharger manufacturers in the United States, producing systems
with intercoolers for cars, trucks, boats, and industrial
applications. ProCharger has been involved in Ford drag racing
since the early 1990s, and is one of the pioneers with innovative
and patented supercharger technology.
NMRA’s ProCharger Pro 5.0 class features tube chassis Ford
Mustang vehicles, featuring small block and big blocks engines
equipped with nitrous oxide, a supercharger, or a turbocharger.
Prior to the start of the 2003 season, a new rules package was
introduced freezing the body, chassis, and driveline rules for a
length of five years; and a new competitor support program was
introduced to help ProCharger Pro 5.0 teams develop sponsorship
support.

March 6-9, 2003.
Doug Mangrum will be competing in Pro 5.0 with a new
combination this season -- featuring a 400 cubic inch engine
paired with the brand new ProCharger F3M supercharger. This
combination looks to produce between 1600 and 1700 horsepower, and
Mangrum estimates he should lose about 2 tenths of a second off of
his best quarter mile times; moving Mangrum into the high 6 second
area.
Doug Mangrum knows that it takes more than just being a great
driver to win races -- it also takes great equipment and great
sponsors. According to Mangrum, his sponsors are the core of his
racing team, and like him, “they are never satisfied, and continue
to strive and improve their already great products.” Doug Mangrum
enters the NMRA 2003 Pro 5.0 season with both new and long-time
sponsors, and he would like to give special thanks to Dallas
Mustang, ProCharger, Granatelli Motorsports, Redline Oil, Keith
Craft Race Engines, Liberty Transmissions, Bob Utter Ford, and
Race Art Grafix.
Doug Mangrum has decided to join the Pro 5.0 Driver Support
Program that the NMRA offered to help Pro 5.0 drivers during their
season long quest for the NMRA Pro 5.0 championship. “It was a
natural for a driver with the national popularity that Doug
Mangrum has to join the NMRA team of Pro 5.0 racers,” said NMRA
head Charlie Harmon. “Mangrum has always enjoyed a loyal fan base,
and with the NMRA coming to his home state of Texas with our Royal
Purple Ford Nationals at Texas Motorplex, we will really get to
see his popularity first hand.” Mangrum, for his part, is excited
to part of the NMRA Pro 5.0 class and the Pro 5.0 program, saying,
“it is finally nice to be able to show sponsors what they are
going to get, before the season even starts.”

2nd Annual Nitto Tires NMRA Spring Ford Nationals
Bradenton Motorsports Park
Bradenton, Florida
March 6-9, 2003
Bright, sunny skies greet ford fans for a fantastic Nitto Tire
NMRA season-opener in Bradenton, Florida. Don Walsh Jr. takes the
victory in ProCharger Pro 5.0 to kick off a stellar 2003 season.
The first weekend of March was a wet, rainy time to be in
Florida, but when the 6th rolled around, the clouds parted to
greet the NMRA faithful as they pulled into Bradenton Motorsports
Park to kick off the 2003 NMRA Ford Nationals season, presented by
5.0 Mustang Magazine. The 2nd Annual Nitto Tire NMRA Spring Ford
Nationals was highly anticipated, and once again, the
season-opener featured packed grandstands, a huge swap meet and
car show, and the cream of the crop in Ford heads-up racers, all
looking to take home the first trophy of the year.
Action in the NMRA Jet-Hot Ford Drag Racing Series, presented
by Ford Racing Performance Parts was hot, with over 200 heads up
cars on the property. ProCharger Pro 5.0, a class that has gone
through a bit of a transformation in the last two years, saw a
strong field of heavy hitters. They were led by veteran
street-legal racer Chuck Samuel, who topped the qualifying order
in Kevin Marsh’s turbocharged Mustang with a 6.87 at 203 mph.
Samuel was deadly consistent during all of his qualifying rounds,
running all of his passes in the 6.90’s and 6.80s. He was followed
in the order by Tim Savell in Todd Wynne’s awesome new
turbocharged car, running a 7.19 at 194mph. Don Walsh Jr., Randy
Eakins and Doug Mangrum filled out the field in this top
eliminator.
During eliminations, Walsh used his legendary reaction time
prowess to get past Eakins, then shocked the crowd by taking out
Samuel with first a holeshot, and then by posting a 6.86 at
202mph. The team of Samuels and Marsh was a fan favorite, and the
NMRA fans were treated to one of the best side by side races of
the event. That sent Walsh to the final round to face Mangrum, who
had a bye in the semis. Both racers cut reaction times in the
.400s, but Walsh was a tick quicker with a .437 to Mangrum’s .467,
and Walsh then streaked to another 6-second pass, this one a 6.90
at 202 to Mangrum’s tire-shaking 8.27 at a coasting 117 mph. Walsh
and crew enjoyed the post-event celebration as the Pro 5.0 winner
of the Nitto Tire Spring Ford Nationals.
MSD Super Street Outlaw was once again one of the top classes
with 24 cars entered. They were led by New Mexico’s John Urist,
who took his turbocharged beast through the traps in 7.98 seconds
at 173mph. Todd Fluman’s ProCharger-blown car was the only other
SSO machine in the sevens, running a 7.98 at 174mph. NMRA 2002
Rookie of the Year Jim Blair sat in the third spot with an 8.091
and hot on his heels was Randy Haywood’s modular-powered car with
an 8.095. Urist weeded his way through the competition to make it
to the semi-finals and got a bye to the final round, while on the
other side of the ladder were two new names to SSO. Mauro Vitale
of Glouster, Virginia, and Mark Van Meter, formerly of the Vortech
Modular Muscle ranks. Vitale advanced by virtue of a holeshot to
face Urist in the final. Urist had a .400-second advantage, so
Vitale needed another holeshot. Going for broke, he red lit,
handing the win to Urist.
Edelbrock Hot Street once again had the tightest field of them
all, with the top 11 cars all in the 9-second range. Shane Long,
Scott Budisalich, Kurt Neighbor, Brian Booze (the defending class
champ), and Bob Hanlon were all qualified between 9.299 and 9.323.
Long made it to the final round by beating Max Gross and Booze (as
well as a bye run), while Budisalich got there at the expense of
Nick Bacalis, Hanlon, and Neighbor. When the lights came down, it
was anybody’s race, as Budisalich and Long cut lights of .453 and
.455, respectively! At the top end, the win light came on in
Budisalich’s lane with a 9.237 to Long’s 9.331.
ProCharger EFI Renegade had 15 cars going for gold, but it was
Kurt Gallant winning from the pole position. Gallant qualified
number one with a 9.197 and weeded his way through the tough field
to meet class veteran Bob Kurgan in the final round. Their race
was brutally close. They left within one-hundreth of a second of
each other, and at the top end it was Gallant winning with a 9.235
to Kurgan’s 9.299!
BFGoodrich Drag Radial saw the defending class champion, Chris
Little, lead the field in qualifying with an 8.803 at 155mph from
his nitrous oxide-equipped car. Peter Champani’s turbocharged
machine was also in the eights, with an 8.955 at 155 qualifying
effort. Not surprisingly, these two made it to the final, and
Little showed up with a strong 8.80 to Champani’s 9.19 at 153.
5.0 Mustang Real Street saw a big field of 18 power-adder,
stick-shift Mustangs, led by Chris Tuten with a 10.24 at 131mph.
Robin Lawrence, who stepped up to Real Street from years in
Factory Stock, sat in the number two spot, followed by class
regular Jason Hoots in third. Hoots and Lawrence were the ones to
make it to the final round, and it was set to be a real shootout.
Unfortunately, Lawrence’s car crept in the lights and lit the red
bulb, handing the win to Hoots. This was Hoots first win in 5.0
Real Street and the team was ecstatic.
The defending champion in Tremec Pure Street, Gene Hindman,
came out swinging by qualifying on top of the 14-car field. He and
Darin Hendricks were the only cars I n the 10s, but he next 10
cars were all in the 11s, making this a fairly tight field. As
fate would have it, Hindman and Hendricks met in the final round.
They had identical .503 reaction times and were
door-handle-to-door-handle all the way down the track. Hendricks
got there first with a 10.895 to the champ’s 10.940, making this
one of the closest races of the whole weekend!
BFGoodrich Factory Stock seemed to be a repeat of the 2002
Bradenton race, with Michael Washington once again coming out on
top to win this naturally aspirated eliminator. Washington, who
teamed up with last year’s champ Justin Burcham, qualified number
one and laid waste to everyone he lined up against, including
Dedpedal Racing’s Tim Duncan in the final round. Duncan actually
got a huge holeshot on Washington, but Washington ran his quickest
pass of the weekend, a 12.014.
Vortech Modular Muscle saw 41 overhead-cam cars compete in
Bradenton, led by Shane Williams in qualifying. But after six
rounds of eliminations, it came down to the winningest Modular
race of them all, Robert Hindman, facing Rick Doern. On the
.500-second Pro tree, Doern just missed a killer leave,
redlighting with an oh-so-close .489. Hindman cut a fantastic .509
and won by virtue of his opponent’s red bulb.
Toyo Tires Open Comp was predictably one of the biggest classes
of them all, with 31 Fords entered. Darryl Cannon’s ’63 Falcon was
the quickest in the class, running a 9.171 at 148mph, but it was
class veteran Larry “Mr. Open Comp” Geddes that took the win.
Geddes beat Randy Conway’s ’94 Cobra in the final with a hole
shot. Both racers broke out, but Geddes was the lesser offender
and got the win light.
Nitto Tires Truck & Lightning had a full 20 trucks entered, led
by Mark Morales and his V8-powered ’88 Ranger. Four rounds of
racing later, and Morales found himself in the finals, facing Jim
Owens and his 2001 Lightning. Owens got to leave first, but
Morales got a big hole shot and chased him down, crossing the
finish line first with a 9.97 at only 127mph to Owens’ 13.32 at
101.
The Superchips Bracket classes were packed with all sorts of
interesting Ford bracket machines. In Superchips Pro Ford
(electronics), Gary Varney (Reynoldsburg, OH) beat Bill Parrett
(Brooksville, FL) when Parrett red lit with a heart-breaking .498.
Superchips Super Ford was won by Wayne Stewart of Lakeland,
Florida, taking out Jeff Keen (Palmetto, FL) when Keen also red
lit, this time a .496. Ouch times two! Superchips Street Ford saw
David Ritchey (Deltona, FL) take out Nick Bailisco (Englewood, FL)
by running closer to his dial-in.
One of the biggest improvements in the Nitto Tire Spring Ford
Nationals from 2002 was the awesome iron in the auto show. The
NMRA All-Ford Auto Show & Shine, presented by Dallas Mustang Parts
was huge at Bradenton, with well over 200 cars in the show field
over the weekend. Special thanks to the terrific NMRA host car
club of the show, Modern Mustang of Seffner, FL, led by President
Mike Gorham! The Best of Show winner was Rob Carr’s ’74 Pantera,
which led the parade of show cars down the track on Sunday. The
Denso Top Qualifier awards went to Don Walsh Jr. (ProCharger Pro
5.0) and John Urist (MSD Super Street Outlaw), and the Centerforce
Burnout Contest was won by Jim Givens of Clearwater, FL.
The next round of NMRA action takes place the first weekend of
April, as the 3rd Annual Bassani Xhaust NMRA Ford Nationals takes
place at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Georgia, April 5-6,
2003.
