How long have you been drag racing?
I started racing a street car when I was 16, it was my everyday
driver.
How did you get your start? My dad and I started bracket
racing a Pro Stock like Firebird with a Lenco in it when I was 17. I
got my NHRA license in that car...it ran 8.90's @ 150 MPH. It is the
same car we made the switch to Pro Stock in 1994 with.
What’s been the biggest challenge to your racing program this season? Compared to last season?
This is my first year racing a car with a power adder. My dad has
helped the guys at ASSC out in the past so I have some knowledge about
the blower car, but not like a NA Pro Stocker.
What would you consider your biggest accomplishments as a racer?
When I went to my first IHRA race in Bristol, Tennessee and qualified
#3. That was awesome. That same year I qualified #1 in the last
session in Bristol in the fall, set low E.T. first round and won the
race. We dominated the entire event. And last but not least, I am a
NHRA Pro stock qualifier, which is probably the biggest accomplishment
of all. NHRA is tough as nails.
What’s gotten you hooked on the Mustang drag racing scene?
Talking to Tim Huston at ASSC, and when Jim Summers left Tim called me
and we worked things out from there.
What are your plans for the future? We want to put the
ASSC Racing Mustang back on top in the Pro 5.0 wars, win some races
and hopefully a championship. Where we go from there, who knows.
What changes, if any, do you feel the sanctioning bodies need to make
in order for our sport to prosper? We need some consistent
parity so racers can invest money into their programs and not have it
made illegal or obsolete in 3 months. We also need a good Contingency
program, and TV time. Companies in corporate America today want to be
on TV, so we need to make that happen.
Who are your biggest friends (or enemies) at the track?
Since this is my first year, I don't have many friends, My dad and I
have known Chuck Samuels for about 15 years, so he is really the only
one so far.
Who do you fear having to see at the starting line? Why?
I never really feared anyone up there. If you are afraid of who is in
the other lane........Don't even roll into the water box.
What would you tell someone looking to start out in the heads-up
racing scene? Do what ever it takes to stay involved with
racing, even if you have to go with someone on your own dime, stay
involved and never give up.
Very briefly, tell me the dumbest
mistake you've ever made at the race track? Honestly, I
don't ever makes mistakes. I and very intense, and my dad taught me to
never let any thing bother me up there. He was a great teacher and
things seem to happen for me naturally in a race car.
Anyone you’d like to thank, wives you HAVE to thank, other things not
mentioned you feel are important? My parents, my Dad for
making things happen so we could continue to race so my career
wouldn't come to an end. My wife is very understanding and she knows
why I do what I do and why I love racing so much.
What music do you listen to? Who’s your favorite? I
listen to Alternative Rock as well as some Old Rock n Roll
Any nick names for you? Not really. At least none I want
to share with the rest of the world.
Do you have any pets? I have a 4 year old female Pug, her
name is Cleo.
Do you have Kids?
I have a 14 month old Daughter, her name is Jessica. She is a blast, I
am gonna miss her when I am on the road.
What do you like to do as a hobby outside of drag racing?
Racing has been a Hobby since I was 8. I have always loved cars,
motorcycles, snowmobiles. I don't do anything else except race
and spend time with my family.
What track do you dislike the most? There are a few out
there, However Atlanta's pits are the "pits".
Which is your favorite track to race on? I loved going to
Pomona, CA for the Winternationals. It isn't the best track out there,
but the place intrigues me. I love it.
Do you have a lucky charm? What is it? No
If you could meet anybody you wanted living or not who would it be? Why?
I would like to meet my Dad's father. He died when my Fad was 17. I
heard a lot of great things about him, I wish I could have spent some
time with him.
Additional Comments: At the
races, I am intense on running good and winning races, however, I
always have time for the fans, and other racers who want to hang out
and bench race. I enjoy the people at the races and helping other
racers as they have helped me makes racing that much more enjoyable.
If you are at the races stop by and say HI!
